ZMQ207 – Reduction to the essentials – and vice versa
ZMQ207 – Practice rooms shine in a new light
Zahnmedizin Quartier 207, or ‘ZMQ207’ for short, has moved from Berlin's Friedrichstraße to new premises on Leipziger Straße. This change of location also marks the starting point for a special lighting development based on the infinite mirror lights on the lift ceiling of the Lafayette building in Quartier 207.

The new lighting concept for the ZMQ207 follows a clear architectural requirement: to create high-quality, precisely controllable light that meets all workplace and medical technology requirements and also impresses with its efficient and glare-free lighting atmosphere.

Skillful integration of classical elements into modern architecture
Barthelme PINO Grande luminaire profiles up to three meters long, combined with LED strips from the Barthelme LEDlight flex STANDARD series and the LEDlight flex Ultra High Efficiency series were used to create luminaires for the entire practice. Referring to the classic fluorescent tube impressions from the Lafayette Building, the precise reinterpretation of the luminaires nevertheless blends consistently into the modern architecture of the new practice rooms. Technically, state-of-the-art efficiency and color rendering values were required. Particularly high CRI lighting is a key requirement in implantology.

Versatile application of the lighting system
It was a central concern of Merianos architects to design the luminaires in such a way that they could be used as universally as possible. Accordingly, the PINO Grande linear luminaires were planned for all areas of the dental practice—from adjustable, suspended versions in the treatment rooms to clean, direct–indirect ceiling‑mounted fixtures in corridors and offices, and even self-supporting bundled installations in prominent locations such as the reception or waiting area. In particular, the spatially expansive bundled installations form a deliberate architectural contrast to the functional restraint ones of the remaining areas.

Reflections that unify
The brilliance of the project also lies in the custom mounting system developed specifically for the round‑rod shaped PINO Grande linear luminaires: the fixings were carefully designed by the architects so that they never interrupt the continuous light-emitting surface. This creates the impression of a completely seamless line of light. In addition, the mounts—designed to hold the luminaires without tension—allow them to rotate so that light intensity can be directed precisely toward specific areas. This was a crucial feature, as the project had to be completed within a very short time frame and the exact lighting requirements were not clearly defined in every area from the outset. Moreover, the construction allows for the smallest possible number of mounting points, thereby protecting the existing capillary tube cooling ceiling. The lighting concept can therefore be summed up in just a few words: reduction to the essential—and vice versa.

Reliable interplay
As the lighting supplier, Josef Barthelme GmbH & Co. KG supported the project. The decisive factors for the collaboration were the exceptionally high color‑rendering values and the quality of the products, complemented by consistently high energy‑efficiency ratings as well as the continuously dedicated and solution‑oriented communication throughout the entire project phase—even under considerable time pressure. Through the successful collaboration between the Merianos architects and the lighting manufacturer Josef Barthelme GmbH, a breathtaking lighting system has been created—its execution validated in both aesthetics and functionality by the consistently positive feedback from the clients.
